When did Ryan Sheckler become Frankie Hill?

So I was cruising around YouTube watching skate videos and came across this footage of of everyone’s favorite guy to hate Ryan Sheckler. Dude sets up a kicker over a rail and then down like a 20ft drop. This shit is just huge and ridiculous. Hate him or love him you gotta respect it, shits gnarly. The first thing it made me think of though was Frankie Hill and his part in the Powell video Ban This. Frankie is the original kicker ramp dude. He’d set it up to blast over fences, rails, onto rails…all kinds of crazy stuff. Now that I’ve definitely dated myself and probably confused a few younger heads sit back and enjoy both clips…especially the Frankie Hill clip. Oh yea, I found the image via Google Images

  3. I’m gonna call my self a hater. Sheckler is annoying cause he is a jock. No one can change the fact that jocks and skateboarding mix like oil and water. Yes he has skill, yes he has family support and yes he crys a lot on TV. This clip you showed of Frankie Hill is amazing because he was doing all that and then some while boards still had a fish tail and 10inches of width. I am not impressed with Shecklers lack of variety for such fame. By the way, did you see that board slide cam on frankie hill’s part? Cameras were the size of 3 lunch boxes back then. How the hell did he do that? Ki I know you love the sheck, the plan b and all that blinged out jazz. It’s just not for dudes like me… and thank got for variety or skateboarding would have become boring a long time ago.

  5. Nugget, there’s no way they actually had a camera on the board while he was sliding. Like you said, cameras were HUGE back then. they probably just placed shoe on the board, put the camera on the board hit record and pushed it down the rail. And yea, Frankie ripped because he did it all on a board the size of a sheet of plywood. and about the same shape.

You could literally take that statement and apply it to pretty much every single trick in every single video for at least the last 10 years. In case you haven’t noticed professional skating has become a giant game of “1 upping” the last person to film at a spot. That’s why you rarely [if ever] see the same trick done at the same spot in any skate video. Do you think Jamie Thomas was thinking how fun it will be to ollie the “Leap of Faith”? Do you think Chris Cole goes to Love Park and says “Hey you know what would be real fun today is to 360flip the gap”. Don’t kid yourself dude. Sheckler [along with every other pro and am] isn’t doing it just to be able to say they did it. They’re doing to say they did it and then filming it to show you they did it.

  8. The clip’s not working at the moment, so I’ll save my comments on that for later. The Traffic video was so rad, because there wasn’t an ounce of one-upping in it. It’s so damn tasteful! And there’s a lot of anybody-can-do-this skating in it, such as skitching cars or pushing down the street. Skateboarding is ART!

  10. You’re right George, skateboarding is an art. I doubt you’ll find many kids these days who will agree with that though or at least recognize it. All I see is kids at parks practicing this trick or that one and then moving on to the next one like it’s a regiment. Teams have “TFs” so their riders can practice tricks and then hopefully get it at a real spot and be crowned king of the spot for at least a week. The Traffic video is definitely an exception to the norm, a rare exception, but a great one none the less. While that Sheckler kickflip is amazing I’d rather watch the Frankie Hill part all day.

  13. did anyone notice the halfcab case that frankie hill did. its hes second to last trick… i just thought it was funny that they put that in. but anyway… im suprised sheckler didnt say “beat that, haters” when he landed that. he seems to be a fan of showing us that hes better then people who dont like him. (read his transworld interview)

  16. everywhere you go people are filming with their cameras. i go to a skatepark and all the kids are filming shit…just fucking skate. mad kids wasted money on the vx1000 that was the big craze. i always see kids with a fancy camera or vx1000 or whatever but how many homie skate videos are out? very few.

  17. This is an interesting comparison. Both used jump ramps, both go (or went in Hills case) huge, both where or on MTV, both made their careers skating on video/television. Major differences: Frankie Hill is an original. Sheckler is not original,or what I would consider “gnarly” Technically clean skateboarding on well made ramps / smooth surfaces with perfect hair and smile is never “gnarly”. Sheckler performed a well planned stunt that was well thought out. Frankie Hill was not pretty in any sense of the word, he just went for it,(with no insurance) with really no precedent for what he was doing and looked like he could explode at any minute thats what made him gnarly! The picture says it all

  18. This is too much for me…Some people on here bitch about what Sheckler does and it makes me laugh. Skateboarding has soo many jocks.Danny Way is a huge jock, but we all still love him..There are so many diff people that skate, how can you say one type sucks? TF’s are bad? Fuck that…it gives you a place to master your craft…You don’t get many tries on the street, so why not get that shit dialed first? I love Traffic and all the guys on it, but just in that same fashion I like Sheckler and all the big name types in skateboarding. They push progression to a whole other level…So what if he whines on tv??…half the people posting on this site whine..They just never cared enough about you or I to give us a show…Sheckler’s where he is because he worked for it. And if you aren’t being hated on…shit..you just ain’t doin it right.

  20. Sheckler’s always been a SPOILED BRAT.. Who parents flew him everywhere holding his hand,wiping his ass and they still are, just on TV now..MY POINT IS..Alot of people aren’t that lucky. Alot of us are poor and have to work alot harder for it…say what you will..That the truth is.. Frankie Hill didn’t have it that easy.. He was FUCKING GNARLY…You can’t say shit about that…

  28. Yeah, sometimes I get heated…it’s whatever…In the end, I always end up laughing because for the most part, the people whom I argue with on here…I see on the street. It seems even stupider in real life.

When I saw the clip of Sheckler the first thing I thought of was that insane jump ramp to rail at the end of Frankie’s part. Whether you hate Sheckler or love him it’s a gnarly ass trick. I figured I’d let some other people possibly see that comparison for themselves as well as peep a sick Frankie part that I’m sure some of the younger readers don’t even know about. Maybe my next post will be “Do you like to ollie over happy flowers or friendly bushes?” or some other non-confrontational type of shit. I find it even more funny because the majority of the comments on here aren’t really hating, it’s mostly just conversation with a few bits of hate thrown in.
