Why the league?…My guess is that most of the postings here are from dudes older then the kids who will be interested in the league…and I understand and respect your positions…However, your way of thinking comes across as saying, its our way or the highway. We all agree that we hated when we are kicked out and told not to skate…Yet why would you get on kids that want to compete and do so on a weekly basis? As for money; recently, one of the organizers (a park owner) and a group of us lame scam artists took it upon ourselves to raise $25,000.00 for a 14yr. old skateboarder killed in an accident,…a college scholarship now in this kids name; all raised by competitions and demos…this is just one of the many things the NXL will do for the young generation. So again, if you hate being hated on by those who don‚Äö√Ñ√¥t skate…why would you want to hate down on kids who skate for love and love to compete, and the group of park owners and parents who offer just that? There is room for everyone…shit, you should be grateful, the league will probably give you more solitude in the places you skate…peace

not for any organization of skateboarding, into copetative or otherwise endevors. supporting the kids is great. it’s great that the people at NXL did that. but by putting a frmework on an activity that encourages exploration and mobility. confining it to certain skateparks takes it from the streets where inovation, direct interaction with changing terrain and with pedestrians has helped most generations of pre-x-games skaters. the same folks that care so much about it that they keep skating through the years of injuries upon injuries and give into it without expectation of getting anything back other than fun and good friends.

They are there to have fun, just like you and I when we go skate. If you want some further proof of skateboarders being the new jocks go to the Shit Park on any given day and count how many kids are there skating, then go to a basketball court and do a comparrison. I’m sure you’ll be surprised by which one has more people occupying the space. Now go kill that.

not for any organization of skateboarding, into copetative or otherwise endevors. supporting the kids is great. it’s great that the people at NXL did that. but by putting a frmework on an activity that encourages exploration and mobility. confining it to certain skateparks takes it from the streets where inovation, direct interaction with changing terrain and with pedestrians has helped most generations of pre-x-games skaters. the same folks that care so much about it that they keep skating through the years of injuries upon injuries and give into it without expectation of getting anything back other than fun and good friends.

i started skating to be like my brother who is 7 years older than me. i’d chase after him and his friends when they tried to ditch me because i was 7 and they were 14. then i stuck with it, because i thought it made me cool. once i realized that i wasn’t cool, and not even skateboarding could help cure that, i kept with it because of the freedom that came along with it. i think the more you argue about it being a sport vs a culture is a waste of time, and that you have deeper issues that your hiding behind your opinion of skateboarding. skateboarding is whatever you call it. if you say it’s a sport, it’s a sport, if you say it’s a culture, guess what? it’s a culture. don’t waste time fighting over something that doesn’t even matter. so some knucklehead started the NXL, guess what he’ll become a millionaire, and have little to no respect, and i’ll still have to go to work tomorrow. is this the 1st organization that has done something like this? nope. get out and go enjoy the best part of skating (know what that is? it’s whatever you say it is) now shut off your computer and go be free

And who the fuck are you to determine who’s a poser and who’s not? Please enlighten us as to what “being a skateboarder is all about”. Cause to me it’s all about having fun, sometimes by myself, but mostly with my friends. It’s not about landing tricks, it’s not about being seen, it’s not about what board I ride or what shirt I wear. I might have a particular board that I prefer, and I might have a pair of shoes that I prefer, but that doesn’t mean shit, it’s all personal preference. To me skateboarding is all about having fun and getting away from the bullshit that is the real world. It might be the same for some of you, it might be different, that’s the beautiful part.
What it boils down to is fun and what makes an individual happy. And it’s people who are on the extreme of one side or the other who take the fun out of it, the people who sound like you. I don’t have to live up to anyones ideas of what a skateboarder should be. Shit, if you ask me that sounds like your trying to fit me into a mold, the very thing your attempting to argue against. I’m happy enough being myself. I don’t need your approval or anyones. You can hate on me for pointing out that skateboarding is a sport, I could fucking care less what anyone thinks.
Another thing I’d like to know if what is a “jock mentality”? If a competitive nature is a “jock mentality” then just about everyone is a “poser”. Don’t confuse being competitive with being associated with contests. While they obviously go hand in hand they can exist on their own. If you weren’t competitive with yourself you’d have never gotten past the ollie, shit you might not have made it that far. It’s the competition within yourself that drives a lot of people, not sure about you, but it does me. And if someone wants to compete in a contest and show everyone what they’ve got then so what.
