Bowl at a street plaza debate

Bump
That’s right, if you’ve been keeping up with the site, you’d know that Ki always gets the most comments out of his posts. Even though this went from, Street plaza in Ohio, to Why SRSP doesn’t include a Bowl. I honestly have a million things to say in response to all the comments posted, but it’s just out of control. Dan, aka DO has been debating this bowl issue pretty heavily. I seen this happen over at Traffic months ago when Ricky announced one of the meetings for the SRSP. It was pretty much the same argument going on here, but Ricky got fed up and deleted all the topics (Ricky deletes old post anyways, not just the one mentioned). I am not gonna go into it here, as I don’t want to try and put a final word on this, so please, read this first then come back if you have an opinion and speak your mind.

  1. YO, I hope that this branch of the comments gets hit up hard. We all love the vert and the bowls and want more of it. I had fun at FDR today. Those who cant/wont ride there totally get my understanding because you fall there a lot. However, try to skate a street spot with out cracks, bums, cops and so on… same problem. Ok, so its been said, we need a bowl. We cant have one at SRSP, not this year at least. BUT we can find a new place and SAN, FPSF and this web log can all help. Dan, we do not expect you to start from scratch, but you can start the ball… with out making bad comments about what we are up to. NO ONE HAS EVER tried to make a true public space for skateboarding, it has not happened, in the USA yet at least. So let us give it a go, we are busy, we work hard, we slack off… We talk about a bowl, but have not gotten there yet. TODAY i grinded pool coping. Today I did not tailslide off the end of a legal bench. I think we should approach the city with this question: what rec center do you want us to start the first of 5 satalite parks you promised. Then we get measurements and then we get Grindline / Dreamland / other super cool trannie guys with experience… to give us a quote to develop a design/build project with a fence and a helmut rule and then we can build a branch of FPSF that will help create awareness about the project. Right now we need Dan to spread GOOD NEWS not RUMORS. Yo ED, you want a vert ramp? Get in line!!! (kidding)

  2. if you want a bowl, build one at fdr….. oh wait theres already like 8 of em. if this plaza thing had a bowl in the design it wouldnt have made it through. im still skeptical though. ill believe this actually is gonna built when i see ledges…

  3. when are u guys looking to break ground on SRSP? springtime? can’t wait til it’s finished. it’ll be fun to have a place to go skate whenever u want without stressing about getting the boot.

  4. “dude, you should go look over some fences. find a real pool. its more fun” But skating a “street” park is the ultimate!

  5. If I could I would take these “go ride fdr” jackals to some really choice spots, like Nashua, Crested Butte, Lincoln City, Newberg, Skatopia, even St. Mary’s MD and then we’d stop back at good old FDR so you people can see what, to me, is an incredible and glaring difference in quality and design. How many street spots will you have to skate past on the way to the street park? Im ready to work in a couple weeks, if people want to fight, we can fight (debate, argue, box), I can be as destructive as I can be constructive. Thanks very much to HB for the bump here.

  6. Im part of the city’s “True public” too, but unlike the dog walking morons reaching for hot crap on cold mornings at logan square, my needs aren’t being addressed at SRSP. Sorry to have to point that out.

  7. I’m far from a legitimate roundwall connoisseur, but let me try to explain something to the “go skate fdr”/”go build your own bowl” crowd: the reason skaters aren’t (or at least shouldn’t be) satisfied with FDR is the same reason that none of you would be satisfied with your street options being limited to just bridge spot. Sure, they’re both fun, but neither is a first class well-designed big-budget spot. Furthermore, building a ledge is not quite as involved as building a smooth evenly transitioned bowl.

  8. And save the “arguing on the internet” posts. It’s great that you can recite verbatim a tired old quip, but it’s not applicable here. Read DO’s comments, read nugget’s comments…there’s discussion going on.

  9. this is going to be my last comment in this. i feel i am wasting my time when it could be better used getting the park funded. there was a time and place for this. it has passed. this talk of destruction is yet another way to further the gap between skateboarders. its time to get over your percieved “loss” or sense of being mistreated and rally the troops to get behind philadelphia skateboarding as a whole. its time to look towards the future and make shit happen for the skateboarders of philly.

  10. It’s not a perfect comparison, but enough to get the idea across. Work with me here, ok HB? k thx.

  11. “its time to look towards the future and make shit happen for the skateboarders of philly.”…..that’s pretty much what I think most of us in this thread are trying to do.

  12. “And there’s nothing in the streets of Philly to skate, either, is there?”…..Legally? No, there isn’t, hence SRSP. And yea, it is wierd BUILDING a STREET spot, but unfortunately if we want to have a legal street spot, this is how we have to start.

  13. I think that Dorsey Rec. is a perfect place to put one of those promised parks. Its located in the lower northeast, and theres a field there that is used for nothing but dog shit. Since the downfall of whitehall, as well as X- GAYmes, i think that the lower northeast needs a place for all those ghetto kids to skate too. All the minorities around that area are gonna end up quitting skating when they’re on the uprise at this moment, as well as in the future. It’s like telling them that they have no chance.

  14. I never said that none of that should be happening. I was pointing out that just b/c dude can throw a big fs at FDR doesn’t mean it’s a dream spot. Should I post a selection of some of the sickest tricks done in Philly and use it as an argument against SRSP? Does that make sense? We have sick spots, but not a lot of legal ones. Agreed. I don’t care about that in the slightest, but I can understand why people want that. So SRSP. Great. But in the same way that you want a well-designed legal bench, can you understand that DO and others like him would love to see a real, well-designed, well-constructed bowl in this city? And that FDR, similar to the streets of Philadelphia, does not provide that?

  15. there’s this super sick curb cut on moyamensing ave in south philly that i skate all the time….it’s awesome.

  16. FDR, Although not a “dream spot” it is a LEGAL place to skate tranny/bowls
Where is the LEGAL street spot? I’m merely pointing out that a LEGAL street spot is needed BEFORE another tranny spot.
“And that FDR, similar to the streets of Philadelphia, does not provide that?”–FDR is still a LEGAL tranny spot, regardless of whether or not you consider it a good tranny spot or not.

  17. Franklins paine is a skatepark funding non- profit. Thats all they are supposed to do, fund skateparks, not decide what kind of terrain is included in a skatepark. So, jim, you are free to depart from the discussion, when I need to get some money, I will call you. And shud I right mor ez syle? Like I said, Im gonna get organized and I am going to get in touch with people and were going to work on this in a real and straightforward manner. From what I’ve read this is what seems to be expected of me. So I will and plan to hold you all to your word. Were all hanging from the same kind of tree here.

  18. I really think that for these five satellite parks, we need to figure out how to work around the helmet rules. Nothing sucks more than helmets.

  19. Also, because I love myself so much I will repeat again that my idea of “squeezing” a bowl (65×45) into those 2.5 acres at SRSP would not require the removal or deletion of even one currently included attribute, including the quarterpipe with the cobblestone path in front of it. Im not fighting against the street elements of your zillion dollar picnic area, I want to add one more, thats all. 4 and washington 4 and morris broad and oregon FDR itself (but not using nepotism as a hiring practice) 12 and federal Maybe I can take a drive this weekend and pick some more spots too. And get whitehall back for those kids up there.

  20. We are past the point of being able to “squeeze a bowl in”, sorry DO. So, as you claimed, you won’t be going to the SRSP when it’s done, huh? Your idea of squeezing in a bowl is like beating a dead horse. You make alot of good points Dan, but also alot of ignorant/selfish ones as well. I stand by the narcissist statement. Comments like “zillion dollar picnic area” make you look like a jackass.

  21. Your trying to anger me, but you can’t. I am sorry if its painful to acknowledge the size and cost of what SRSP is going to be. Even in the drawing there are people using the park, freeloaders, that arent skating. They should contribute too, if its truly public, then where are the local joggers and disco roller skaters? I looked at the designs yesterday in hopes of finding something interesting to me there. Yes, maybe ollie off the stage into the QP or something, over the flowers, but then the cobble stone path is right there. I saw a lot of grass there but thats probably for the freeloading LSNA neighborhood chablis toasts right? Its too late, by what, a week? OK, fine, so be it, you can have that. I’ll take another location, like I noted above.

  22. It’s a shame this topic upsets you so much. I think I’m just going to start requoting my posts.

  23. i went and skated oregon and seattle all summer, nothing compares to FDR. cracks, uneven surfaces, and rough crete are the roots of skating and you should understand the hardwork that went into that place…if we put a bowl @ SRSP, why not a fucking ledge at FDR? Doesn’t feel right, now does it? Dan, I would enjoy a meeting to discuss your concerns. brad@franklinspaine.org In addition, anyone else who would like to discuss anything and everything, feel free….

  24. “It’s a shame this topic upsets you so much. I think I’m just going to start requoting my posts.”–Tips, who are you refering to?

  25. “Why not a fucking ledge at FDR?” Good question. As long as it’s not in the middle of everything, why not? Would it harm something?

  26. A ledge doesn’t feel right at FDR, and neither does that rail. Actually, I think a wide rainbow ledge would be more appropriate than that rail, but what’s done is done. Embrace the new.

  27. The topic doesn’t frustrate me, it’s the accusations, stabs, and the illusion that this is the first and only place this topic was ever discussed. I’m stoked on the constructive comments, but the negative shit is just childish.

  28. building a “street” area @ FDR has been discussed and determined to be a unfavorable idea. Part of the allure of skating in Philadelphia, is the interaction with the surrounding public and architecture, which is why there will be no fences around SRSP and no bowl….design is approved.

  29. anyway, legal v illegal, good crete v bad crete…we can run in this circle all week. all of the initial questions and wondering aside, at this point it’s really just coming down to whether or not DO is going to get some support for pushing forward a bowl in one of the alleged satellite park locations. everyone should be in support of that, I would think. one spot at a time needn’t be the mantra if there’s the manpower to get behind it.

  30. It’s not constructive to bash one project while simultaniously trying to gain support for another.

  31. i seen a gap to wallride on a jersey barrier on, um, 4th and Market. kinda ollie off of this bump to wallride on a baricade. it’s cool because you have to gap out over this sewer grate. it’ll totally ruin your day.

  32. I would really love to answer everyone’s compliants, and concerns. I have posted my email months back and told everyone to contact me. (no one did, surprise surprise!!!) Everyone that knows me, knows WE have worked our ass off getting to where we are. I refuse to sit here and read comments about how the process and the organizations were shady or what have you. (yes, I am pissed!) You want something, email me…if not, no complaints. I am trying my best to maintain my professionalism, which based on the ignorant comments is quite difficult. DO – you have made it very clear that you do not have all the facts needed to make a constructive critique of the project(s) we are working on. I can only ask people to email me with theu issues so much….here it is again, save it, write it down, sribble it on your hand…memorize it… brad@franklinspaine.org

  33. Hey wait!!! This solves EVERYTHING! Isn’t BAM and Glomb suppose to be building a new bowl at FDR???

  34. Yeah, Ed, I read that too, in Mazur’s focus, but argueing on the internet is like … as fruitful as looking for a private indoor skatepark. It can’t happen in philly.

  35. Really? You don’t say? If you are that hard up, move to somewhere that is ahead of philly in this “skatepark game”. I moved back here for plenty of reasons. Where are all these legal skate plaza’s in PA?

  36. Wow, Dan, I gotta hand it to you. I thought this new post was going to bring about more thinking. But it looks like more of the same thing. Build a bowl at SRSP. Sounds like we are going no where. Brad asked you to contact him. He knows his shit and he is pushing for trannie here in Philly. He works hard at making it happen, so take that first step and email him and let us all know how we can help. We all want to see some more parks. We can only do 5 things at one time, not 6. Brad, Jim and Jon… thanks for trying to keep this positive. For the next 3 months I am only thinking about SRSP… mostly because I am trying to make the design work better for everyone who will use it. Trust me, it is a huge ball of wax. The city, the planners, the everyone involved make it very hard to make changes. I can not say it enough, we are ALL doing this for the first time so lay off a little would ya?

  37. i was expecting hate. hate from BMX, neighbors, weirdos, not from another skateboarder….. but to add some more fuel to the fire. the going rate for a concrete skatepark, generic style nothing spectacualr, is $30 a square foot. SRSP is 2.5 acres which is 90,000 sq feet. which would make a generic run of the mill concrete park cost roughly 2.7mill just for concrete. that does not include prep, landscaping, drainage, pool coping, over vert, fencing, lighting, benches, any of the things that can be found in a normal park. so go talk to a contractor to ballpark the additional costs. talk amongst yourselves.

  38. Holy crap, we need a plaza to skate. Not a bowl. Focus on a plaza first, then a bowl. This is not a damn “skatepark”, it is a plaza that we can skate in. Plazas do not have bowls. We have FDR for the bowl heads, we used to have LOVE for the street heads. Now we don’t and we need something to help fill that void. I love all types of skating, but street skating in philly has been hit the hardest. I am happy heading to FDR when I feel like skating concrete or the sick miniramp there. I just think that we should try not to turn the SRSP into some “all-in-one solve every skate problem” spot. The plaza will be sick, we don’t need anymore quarter pipes. I mean hell, right now there is not even a good ledge to skate with out the fear of cops coming after you.

  39. SRSP doesn’t need a bowl. FDR is great. Philly is getting a skate plaza (for now). It does need a well built bowl and flow park though. I was impressed with all the passion for a bowl. Everyone who argued for a bowl contact me. What we really need are two things. First we need a couple generators and lights for night sessions at FDR (the city will never allow real lights and night skating). Second, we need a skater owned/rented space. Philly is full of shitholes to rent. If we get enough folks we can have a keyholder situation like Autumn has. No bikes and a dry warmer than the elements place to skate….a bowl. Let me know who you are an lets start something joe@punkerthanyou.com

  41. I just said this to Brad in an email, but I think it would be good to get it out in the open… I’d like to do something in the likes of that link I sent a while back: the art park in Pittsburg. Want to get abstrakt with ledges? Take a look at that MC Escher’s Waterfall (http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/24/010_e15~Waterfall-Posters.jpg). In the background there are tiered garden steps, like how the farmers do in China. They form all kinds of interesting gaps and ledge setups. I think it’s time to really start treating skateboarding like art.

  42. I sent some emails, and I am looking ahead to the replies. We will see what happens. I hope its good.

  43. dude i did a mcwhirl to backside half nelson at fdr!, but i want many ledges with lots of wax on them, no wax haters allowed. nothing can be to waxed. haller at them nollie flip crooks for 10 feet, pce

  44. holy shit, im gone for a few days, and missed all the arguing. This DO character seems a bit ignorant, what dont you understand about a STREET plaza? Go to Sayreville to skate bowls like i do. Go to FDR to skate bowls, like i do. I dont go to plazas in the city to skate bowls, thats retarded. I skate STREET in the streets of Philly. Its not that hard, There are plenty of spots, and this STREET plaza will be a replacment for a lack of the Love Parks and City Halls.( I dont see any bowls anywhere near any of these spots) Just fucking skate what ever is put in front of you. I dont bitch about not having a ledge at FDR, i skate what they already have to offer, so quit bitching about a fucking bowl in the middle of an Urban park. This argument is so fucking old, boring, stupid, worthless, and it just makes you look like you cant understand the whole goal behind what SRSP is about. Is it that you cant skate street? Is it that you dont like to push? Why is it so important to you DO that there is a bowl in this URBAN STREET plaza? Do you understand that there are guys around trying to work on skatepark style stuff too, just at different locations? Peace to the Gods………………

  45. It looks like to sum it up: Joe wants to get an indoor spot going (but needs to fix his email). Dan would love to be involved in a bowl project and has contacted Brad. Brad is going to help organize our first satalite bowl park. Yeppie! I hope this thread is closed. Thank you pickles.

  46. Right on Nugget. SRSP and its design is still a mystery to me, but whatever, together we can do it all over again and I am really willing to work for this. I know there is a difference, call me a visionary or a lunatic, but when Im finished (and when you’ve all jumped down your last double sets) you will see what I meant. You will see that I meant you no harm, that I am not an adversary. Can I get permission to pop just one “balloon” in the future? Just one, I want to hear the gas releasing just once from a particularly well inflated rubber container.

  47. Okay, I see a big problem here. People are missing the point of the whole “skate plaza” deal. The point of having an actual “skate plaza” is to keep up with the times, so-to-speak. There are waaay more kids on the streets these days……STREET SKATING. You drive down the street and you see kids skating left and right. THat causes spots to become scarce so much more quickly. Spots are truly dissappearing at a rapid rate. For Christ’s sakes, this city actually bent a friggin’ pole jam back!!!! That’s why it’s more important to focus more on the street aspect of “the plaza.” Kids DO have the option to go down to FDR and gnar it out, if they’re looking to skate some raw tranny. Shit, in case you haven’t noticed, FDR is as gnar as they come. There’s planty of tranny-quility there. But finding a good ledge where you can learn on, is almost nearly impossible. Philly has really lost that. I’ve been to the plaza in Ohio, and in person, it looks like a REAL public park. It does. People were eating lunch, walking their dogs, and just enjoying a nice day. Sure kids were skating around, but there were no problems. THere was no fence and you didn’t get that skatepark vibe either. There were no ramps around, unless you went to the skatepark down the street. It made sense. It was aestetically pleasing. It looked natural. So much to the point where when people would walk through, or when the cops would rarely roll by, you got the feeling that you might get kicked out. BUt you didn’t. It was overwhelming at first. Maybe I am just speaking for myself, but I just don’t think having a bowl at the Philly plaza is gonna keep that feel. Having a bowl, WILL turn it into a skate park. It’s a street plaza, and unless you’re playing TOny Hawk’s Pro Skater, chances are you haven’t skated a bowl while cruising down the street. Call me crazy, and I mean no disrespect to those who skate bowls, but I have to stand strong on this one. YOu already have the tranny, but I’m looking from some good manny’s. Peace.

  48. A private little safe haven in SOuth Philly seems like a good idea for the time being. Plenty of small warehouses for rent. I’m down to kick in on some rent to have at least some smooth shit to hit this winter without driving to Borderline. Maybe a nice little mini-ramp…..

: The users mailfolder is over the allowed quota (size).

Joe, do you want a GMail invite?

  50. Is Gmail really punk enough though? For a while you could get free email from budweiser too, but it wasn’t as powerful as Gmail, though it was clearly more hesh.

  51. i been skatingunder 95 off richmond street . in port ricmond. kenzo. area. tons of space(warehouses too) and no one around .theres already a natural bank could use a ledge or something . a big block or some shit ath the toop of the bank. i skate by myself 99 percent of the time but would be cool to get some diy shit going on up there. oh yeah i also put up a piece of wood and rigged it up on this fence . so you got a preatty sick wallride too. not bad. the bank also goes up to a parking lot. if i could draw it that be better. i think its clear. interweb. yep

  52. do, you skate fdr much? no one seems to know who you are, while you claim to be soo vested in seeing a new bowl being built at SRSP, WTF? If you were interested in the philadelphia scene, wouldn’t you have been involved , and NOT JUST RUNNING YOUR MOUTH. SHUT UP YA BIG DUMMY

  53. him posting a bunch of crap hardly has anything to do with him skating FDR, and/or having a vested ineterst in the philadelphia scene

  54. Oh yeah, there is a halloween party and clean up….@ you guessed it….FDR…come one, come all to support the philly skateboard scene, or will you be too bust posting “claims” on the haveboard site… havecomputer, willbitch

  55. Have computer, will bitch? Thats amazing! For those who got here late, the bowl guys are working on getting a bowl. There is no reason to talk about it on this post any more. Although, I can not help but come back to see who pops up next. Ki, its done, no one is going to put a bowl at the SRSP site this year so dont worry about it. Maybe some day at another location along the trail? Who knows. For now we gotta raise some loot.

  56. why do you want a bowl at the skate plaza? youll get all those street kooks doing kickflips into the deep end. fuck that get a real session going with people who actually add to a session
