UPDATE 2-27-2006

“We are planning a photograph exhibition in honor of our dearly departed friend, Harold Hunter, to benefit the Harold Hunter Foundation.

Harold Hunter was one of the most recognized personalities to roll through the streets of New York City.

Having grown up in the Campos Housing Projects, Harold made his way through life on a skateboard. After years of receiving consistent coverage in all the major skateboard publications, he quickly became a household name, emerging as one of NYCs first professional skateboarders.

In the early ’90s Harold landed a lead role in the controversial film “Kids,” in which he played a boisterous teenage skateboarder (not unlike himself). Thereafter he appeared in countless films, videos and magazines.

Over the last two decades Harold became a fixture in downtown Manhattan, becoming the virtual comedic Mayor of the Lower East Side (L.E.S.) and sharing his love globally as he traveled around the world.

His humor and energy will be greatly missed by all those who knew him both personally and through his legend. He was a messenger of fun, love and peace to everyone, everywhere. Click here to read the NY Times obituary: Harold Hunter Obituary

  1. Harold Hunter, 31, who performed stunts in Larry Clark’s film about an HIV-positive skateboarder, was discovered by his brother at 4 p.m. in his East 13th Street apartment, police. Cops said they retrieved cocaine from “on and around the body.” “He was saying stuff like, ‘When I die I’m going to be famous,’ ” said Hunter’s sister Rebecca Atkins. “He used to have this saying, ‘Legends never die.’ ” :(

  2. That’s a shame. Harold was a crazy ass dude. I remember him coming into the offices at Zoo and just telling some of the most absurd stories I’ve ever heard. Nice guy and was always good for a laugh. Live fast die young.

  3. Hopefully this will be a lesson to other coke users and that, even in his death, harold can show you what not to do (reference, tributary in nature, to the flying salami). Such a big influence and nobody tried to stop him? Where were his friends? Found alone? Like the king of NYC was partying alone, and to that degree? Rest in peace, of course, and without making light of the situation, I think it is deserving of an investigation. The whole thing just seems out of place.

  4. for some reason zoo york isn’t providing the funds for the funeral, so I heard, dunno. Mark Ecko is a bag of douche

  5. Sorry to hear of Harolds death! It’s a big loss to the skateboarding world and hopefully we all can learn a lesson out of this, so that it wasn’t all for nothing! I Hope he is up there somewhere, in a better place, frontside heelflipping da skys! Peace out Harold!!!

  6. It is sad to hear that Harold dies. I lost my uncle not to long ago to a brain aneurysm so I know how it feels to lose someone very close to you. My sympathy is with anyone and everyone close to harold RIP Harold Hunter

  7. i’ll forever miss you…………………………….. on the street(philly, to N.Y., to L.A. to F.L.A.) and @ FDR as well….. forever love & eternal rest. ……. :(

  8. AT HELLFEST A FEW YEARS BACK HAROLD WAS CHILLIN AT THE ZOO YORK MERCH TENT. I WALKED BY AND HE ASKED ME TO COME OVER, HE HANDED ME SOME FREE WRIST BANDS AND ASKED FOR A KISS. I WAS LAUGHING BECAUSE I REMEMBER WATCHING HIM IN KIDS WHEN I WAS A LOT YOUNGER… I GAVE HIM A KISS-NO TONGUE!-AND KIND OF CHUCKLED TO MYSELF THE REST OF THE DAY. HE WAS TRYIN TO BE SLICK AND CUTE…AND IT WAS HIS CHARM THAT GOT ME. I AM PRETTY SURE HE WAS DOING IT ALL DAY TO SEE HOW MANY GIRLS HE COULD KISS… HAHAHA… *HOPE HIS SPIRIT IS FLYIN HIGH OUT OF THIS WORLD** SKATE ON…

  9. YO! K…what you mean downers and cain dont mix, no shit! you know something we dont about that night?

  10. R.I.P. to the legend Harold Hunter. Now your in skater’s paradise sure it never rains and the grinds never end im sure you and Justin are doing it big man!we will all travel down that road and meet up again R.I.P.

  11. i remember seeing harold in a movie where he goes up to a dude takes a bite of his hamburger then slaps the guy. this for me was a pivotal point i practiced that move on losers all the time with my moms rice crispy squares, just try to remeber the positives. He was a hilarious individual and will be missed

  12. I was not shocked by his death. I’m a little late finding out, my sister just told me about it. His “friends” at Zoo York encouraged him, laughed at him and treated his addiction like a running joke. While my sister and I were visiting their offices about 8 years ago, I met with Harold who was telling a story that was so sad and he was asking clearly for help. They gave him $20 and he left. He seemed to never have grown up. I hope he did not suffer and pray for his family and “real” friends for there loss.
