DC‘s new blog/zine-thing is having a contest on where to bring it’s King of Series Skate Contest to Philly. Go to dc7zine.com and look on the right side of the page to vote. Mexico City is currently in the lead. I’d love to see this event come to Philly. Send this to your friends. Vote from all of your browsers. Let’s show the world Philly is still on the map.
Thanks to Fabian for the heads up on this.
Haha. Yeah, bullshit on that. The cops would have a field day….
Damn Ki. You are most likely right. But, lets try to stay positive. I was thinking the other day about how bummed out and negative people are in Philly. It does not have to be like that. Let’s all go skating.
this would be amazing. can anyone skate in this?
Jeff Pang and myself tried to get King of Philly going about 2 years ago, but DC wouldn’t do it with out permission from the city to use LOVE. Philly refused and DC moved on. I tried to get talks going again with other spots but It seemed as if their minds have been made up.
Ok…G.Lang…you’re right. I AM gonna try to stay positive..It’s hard though. I moved out of the city solely because I didn’t skate nearly as much as I would have liked too. I live in the burbs now…and I skate waay more. It’s rare if I come to the city to skate at all..
But for arguments sake…let’s start throwing spots out there where they could have it. The only one I can think of so far that could hold that many people skating at once….uh…ghetto banks?
I have no idea where they should/could hold something like that. I went and voted and Philly is in 3rd place. Who knows if Philly will get it so it’s probably counter-productive for us to invest anymore energy until it’s a definite thing. But, Ki, lets go skate soon. Once I get my car out from under the snow I can drive to the park again. Or someplace less slippery out your way. Peace y’all and I hope to see you out there!
I suggest those sipping the haterade read this excerpt: “Three reasons why a little extra optimism is a good thing“.
Focusing on a location and giving up without even trying won’t get anyone anywhere. People bag on the “Philly Skate Scene” all the time, from pros to random joes and it’s a little tired. It’s an uphill battle and there are plenty out there fighting the good fight. I feel like this could be compared to the sentiment of “I’m not gonna try that trick at that spot because I’ll probably fall (or already fell once).” As skateboarders, we all know it’s about trying over and over until we make it. This doesn’t just apply to tricks; It applies to this event just as much as that line you want to get filmed or that gap you’ve been trying to kickflip.
Going to the “This Time Tomorrow Premiere” definitely proved there is still a scene in Philly and people are out there staying positive and doing rad things. It was a snowy night and people still came out and cheered on the video and had a great time.
Ki, you’ve stated plenty of times that you are gonna try and keep it positive and then immediately bounce back to Captain. Negative. Let’s see you create actions from your words. Greg, I appreciate you steering things in the positive direction.
I don’t really know much about this event other than Fabian asked me to post it up. I am not aware of the logistics of it all, but I doubt DC would have even added Philly as a potential host city if they weren’t willing to try again to work with the city on getting a legitimate spot for this to happen.
I’ll end my rambling now. Greg, I need a ride to the skatepark. This winter is giving me the blues.
They should have the contest on Alter Street, two doors down from the Warehouse, where that cranky old man lives.
ya FPSF tried to get the city “on board” with DC many times for many events and plans.
Another “what is in it for the City of Philadelphia” stance from City Hall, mixed with a clusterfuck of “speak to this person, get this permit, is Fairmount Park ok with it, pay for security and police etc…”
True story.
PS – Nike gave to FDR, another true story FPSF helped make happen.
Yeah Miller put Pang in touch with me last year about this. We ran it up the flagpole and it stopped with Margaret Hughes – “Deputy City Representative.” She denied the proposal (well put together by Pang and his team at DC) based on the usual jargon – it is not allowed at LOVE and will cause damage. When Pang offered to pay for the cost of repairs and / or donate to us to develop a legal spot in the city for the use of LOVE, it was of course still denied. This infuriated Jesse Rendell who is on our Board and he got the Governor to call Mayor Nutter. Nutter said he would call DC and never did. We flanked them about a great opportunity and nada. Keep it positive and maybe this year we can make a difference. Perhaps we can inundate Margaret and the Mayor with letters? My $0.02.
Hey, spoke my opinion. I’m pretty damn positive nowadays….However, shit ain’t always gonna be sunny. I just call it as I see it. I’m not gonna ignore a purple elephant in the room.
The skate scene where I’m at is pretty cool. I like it. There are some really good kids in my area. Actually…lemme change that…there are some AMAZING kids in my area. It may not be right in the hub of the city again, but it’s still Philadelphia.
As far as creating my actions into words…I do it. I skate every day. Whether I’m filming or not, I clock alot of hours on my board. I’m in it for the long haul.
For DC to hold a King Of Philadelphia, it would take support from the city…Which, as we all know…is hard to get. I would LOVE to see it. But, just like alot of things, I’m not getting my hopes up.
G. Lang, Haveboard, and all the other homies I go back and forth with on here…We DO need to skate together. It’s been a while. Maybe a few games of skate, a couple laughs and ideas getting tossed out…we’ll get something going..You never know…
ghetto banks contest would be amazing. I know its not street, but why not pops or something like that?
Someone would be killed if they had it at Pop’s…That would have to be where the finals are held..That way the people count would be widdled down. But it would be tight to see.
Skolitics.
haha but people might actually be killed at ghetto banks…
Ghetto banks is the safest place in the city…..haha. Lemme say this…Ghetto banks is the only place I have ever been too were 4 people will rob 10, with no gun.
maybe try to have it at city hall like the x games. cept few days before the contest the benches magically become skateable ;-)
Anyone know the proposed date of the event?
